1.What artist(s) have you looked at that have really inspired the development of your own work(s)?

My personal and class work vary greatly in style and quality. Though I try extremely hard in class to make pieces to the best of my ability; my personal illustration work has years more practice and thus more inspiration. My personal illustration style inspired by artists such as sophira lou and your favorite martian. I use the expressive nature and colour of their pieces to add to my own personal work.

However my class work is inspired by many well known artists who do not draw in my style of illustration; I decided to go with artists whos work inspires me and challenge myself to try new techniques such as divisionism and paint as a medium in of its self. Artists such as van gogh and Gustave Courbet have inspired my composition with a strong subject and complimentary and harmonious colour pallets, I also just really enjoy looking at their pieces and feel an emotional response when viewing their work.

2. How have these artists inspired and effected the way that you have created your work to get meaning across to any audience through your use of composition, materials and techniques?

Artists such as van gogh have introduced me to such techniques as divisionism which I now use in my personal sketch book work.

Gustave Courbet has inspired me to use paint as a medium as initially I didn’t like using paint due to the mess and waiting for layers to dry. Gustaves work displays a strong subject with dark subject and strong highlights; typically something I wouldn’t like but im drawn to his work for some unknown reason to me.

3. How effective has your research been on the development of your creative work overall? Show other examples of your work.

I believe ive been able to develop my painting skills and become more expressive with my work. Ive often found myself making my work too stiff and clean however now I am being more expressive

4. Which materials and techniques have you found the most challenging to learn so far

and why?

Show an example of your work to illustrate this.

I've found oil pastels the hardest to use as you can't get a flat colour and crisp edge to my knowledge and thus I haven't found a good use for them in my work

5. How could you improve your development of using particular materials and

techniques in your work for the future?

I intend to keep using even the materials I find difficult to use in my work. ill also look for tutorials and use these as examples in my sketchbook (collage and personal)

6. What are the strengths and what are the improvements in your shading and trying

to capture light in your work.Show us how important trying to capture light is in

piece(s) of your work.

I personally like to use shading in all branches of my work, shading while using perspective allows you to show the depth of some images and also help draw the eye to certain aspects of the piece which can be useful when highlighting the subject of the piece.

I am aware my portrait piece needs more darker values and I intend to work on this in my next piece.

7. Explain your reasons for using specific materials and media in your concept art piece

of work.

I decided to use acrylic for the backdrops I was aware it would blend well and fill the space quickly and effectivly leaving a smooth back drop so I can use divisionism over top. Promarkers were used for the detail as I was able to have a lot of control with them; I admit to keeping within my comfort zone with this piece as to get my best result. The collaging was a last minute addition due to my failed attempt at building up opacity with oil pastels. Oil pastels are a weakness for me one of which I shall work on in the future. the collaging made a nice 3D effect and really stood out among my nature sprites.
