Concept Art

My concept art research started with looking at game scenery, ive always been heavily inspired by Runescape and World Of Warcraft. The designers Andrew and Paul Gower created half of the concepts above and Tom Chilton, Rob Pardo and Jeff Kaplan made the other three. I decided I wanted to use the colour and mood from starbreeze village and the buildings of Runescape.

I then moved onto fantasy foliage and housing which i decided would be the main focus of my piece, I wanted to use the transition of dusk to dawn from my "night and day" piece and decided on two main focal points. The house and The tree.

This is my thumbnail, I decided it was slightly too crowded and opted to remove the water droplets. I however liked the background gradient and height of the foliage. I wanted to create a gradient of Light to dark to simulate dawn and a warm feel and wanted to use warm hues. I tried to keep the perspective intresting but the scale in comparison to the other trees and mountains makes the tree look more like a beanstalk. Without other beanstalk trees this looks odd and I should have considered this more carefully in the planning stage.

Then was onto character design which was heavily drawn from "manga Shakespeare - A Midsummer Nights Dream" illustrated by Kate Brown. I decided I wanted to have a simple non distracting design which also contrasted the background. They would reside in the tree whilst my other characters remained in the "human" section of the world.
The Process/Final Piece

Materials used: Paper, Promarkers, Acrylic Paint, Fine liners, Pencil, Collage paper, Tears.

Time taken: roughly 7 hours

Initially I used oil pastels to create the flowers on the tree however they didn't manage to layer and give the effect I desired, after much thought I decided to use paper to give a more 3D and natural effect.

Final critiques: overall I like the piece, I have to say id preferred it more if i would have used coloured pencils instead of paint to create a softer background. The lower perspective could do with some adjusting but overall I am happy with the result.
I have also decided to fill In the blank space with a space like texture to emphasise the triangular structure intended in the piece and give a finished, professional feel. After doing so I am happy with the over all effect of the oil and acrylic together. In the future I aim to work on my perspective and use foresight to be able to recognise continuity errors in the plant life of the created universe. I also could have added more highlights to the water to show that the sun was just setting over it and the shadows could be enhanced further to show the depth of the objects being suggested.
